We are thinking about relocating to the region in the near future.
Are there many live music venues (top 40/ rock/ blues) along the beach areas or inland?
I am a guitarist and before making the move I just want to get an idea
of the situation for musicians looking for a band or solo work.
Thanks for any info.

Check out Folio Weekly.
Staying near Jax (on the Georgia border, creeping up into the Carolinas) might be more lucrative than the west side. There are some fine regional bands.
Also, there is a fine little scene around the South Walton beaches area, emphasis on "little."

There are a good number of places to play for an area its size, but you're almost always going to have to have a day job even if you've got a regular gig. A couple places that talk about the local music scene:

The Beachcomber Newspaper - Destin, Fort Walton Beach - Entertainment, Nightlife, Restaurant Guide, Dining, Music, Editorial

Flora-Bama Lounge and Package Perdido Key Florida

The Florabama does a big songwriting event every year. (And one of its former regular musicians won American Idol a couple years back)

Yes, I think this is true of the northeast side, as well, though there have been a few break-outs.
