Can't say that there's anything that I wanted to try that I didn't splurge on once. It's wanting and not being able to splurge routinely that's my problem... truly authentic things like cheese and olives and caviar instead of the cheaper supermarket versions. Oh how I would love to be able to afford some of the real foods imported from their native countries on a regular basis!
Foie Gras. Best thing I ever tasted, but it was in Paris. I can get it here, but it's hard to find, incredibly expensive, and I'd be afraid of cooking it wrong.
Regarding Saffron - if you have an Indian or Middle Eastern grocery near you, check out their saffron. I have found it to be much cheaper than if bought in an "American" store. And a tiny bit of it goes a long way.
For me its more about splurging at some of the top restaurants in the world on a regular basis. Where I live I am with in a days ride to many of the top rated culinary establishments in the world. At about 250-500 for a meal including drinks for two, it is a one time a year deal.
I really like fresh Russian caviar but only splurge at New Years and then usually an ounce of Sevruga or Beluga.
