I don't know if mince pie is more of a Northern thing or what, but I had never heard of one until I saw a frozen one in the grocery store several years ago. I was curious what it tasted like so I bought one, BIG mistake, that was the nastiest pie I had ever tasted.
I don't know if it's a northern thing or not, but both of my very Texan grandmothers always made them for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Only problem was the grandparents were the only people that ever ate them. No one else would touch them. I've never seen a frozen one, that I can recall.

I used to hate Mince when I was younger.. What kid wants a spiced pie with the word meat in it?? Not me there were way too many sweet things to eat.
My take on it is that any TG pie has to have been available to the Pilgrims. This is kind of silly, I know, since I really don't know what would have been available, but I'm thinking pumpkin, and apple and pecan pies are OK, but banana or coconut cream would not be on my menu.
I think of mince as being for Christmas.
