I enjoy shrimp and usually get it at Chinese takeout or buy frozen to cook with from Walmart or local super market. I've heard of people getting sick on shrimp and have friend who would never order shrimp anything from Chinese takeout. So far I never had a reaction to eating shrimp but was wondering if I should play safe and avoid it. BTW, I love shrimp fried rice and Mei Fun. I also cook with frozen shrimp not knowing where it comes from or how it was treated. Your thoughts?

If you really like it just reheat it to over 160 degrees for over 10 minutes. It will kill any germs. You should limit your seafood intake though due to mercury.

here is a link to seafood that is good for you and the enviro too:

Seafood Selector (Main Page) - Environmental Defense Fund

(funny how that always seems to naturally be the case..hmmm)

Health effects from too much seafood take your whole life to show up. One thing that mercury toxicity can do to you is slow down your thyroid by polluting it and hinder your kidneys which healthy kidneys help make a chemical that makes muscle. High level of mercury also decreases your testosterone which can leave males and females sluggish. Lower testosterone = higher body fat = more naturally gooey body eating the same amount of cals.

They do spray that shrimp meat with chemical stuff too.
Sodium triphosphate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thats not organic! LOL

And it can be toxic based on dose. I don't know the dose per shrimp you get or the chemical half life of that in the body.

Well, having been eating so many things for so many years, and having seen so many things go through the "bad for you!", "good for you!" "bad for you!" "good for you!" cycle so many times, and having seen how much people just NEED to worry, and having pretty darned good genes anyway, I think I'll take the risk. Especially since shrimp is one of the things that I feel very healthy after having eaten it - I finally figured out, listen to my body, not to whoever needs to publish this year.

Besides, I'm of the generation that used to play with the mercury out of broken thermometers and rode around in cars that didn't even have seatbelts, never mind car seats, for, oh, 25 years or so, so I'm probably already doomed.

I did read in one of these health books that to stay away from shellfish as they are scavengers and eat everything. Shellfish is my favorite too, especially scallops.

I don't eat tons of shrimp or any other seafood. Shrimp, tuna, or other fish/seafood I eat 1 - 2 times a week. I feel that is a pretty safe level.

I had shrimp for dinner both last night and tonight, and I feel fine. I have only gotten sick from shrimp once, and that was because it was undercooked. It was at a restaurant that is no longer in business. As long as shrimp is cooked probably, I feel it is safe to eat.

Good eating!
