Just bought another bag of potatoes from Safeway, and sure enough there was about 1/3 of the bag rotten etc.
Also bought a bag of oranges from Walmart () and even after trying to pick out a good bag, 1/2 were rotten inside the orange.
Have bag and receipt and taking them back...I just can't afford to pay that price of food now and be expected to (eat) the bad ones.
I've never had a problem with my Publix Market. Others yes and I hate it. Sometimes if it is just a few it's cheaper to toss than burn the gas to take them back.
I know what you mean. I have been shopping the ads for produce and picking the produce loose myself. Our Wal Marts around here have the absolute worst produce. And, there is absolutely nothing worse than rotten potatoes. Yuck!

publix is the best--in the north it's a toss up as to which supermarket can display the most rotten fruits and veggies(except for wegman's) I REALLY MISS PUBLIX
have you tried signing up for a CSA? a couple of my friends are doing it and they receive a box of farm-fresh produce every week. It's too much for a single guy but they're married & they eat most of it up. However, im in SoCal so the weather & growing conditions may be more conducive to this type of farm-to-consumer arrangement than in colder locales.
I pick all our fruits and vegetables from the loose bins (Safeway). For the same reason as the OP. They're a bit more expensive but it balances out with no bad ones.
Does anyone notice how they put potatoes in brown or colored bags so you can't see them...Almost always one bad one in there with a spot or mush that is not yet nose detectable, so I take out as soon as getting them home, rinse and dry in dish drainer and put in a basket in the pantry. I prefer buying sweet potatoes or squash I can see... Another one I have issues with lately is onions, I am so tired of mold or mush under at least one, so now I only get the singles, but can see what I'm buying...
