When DH and I were stationed in Italy, we went out every so often and had excellent meals to include calamari. At one restaurant, it was done on a grill along with the bruschetta.
You can order them at many restaurants stateside but they've always been fried not grilled. I've found them in Costco - freezer section. I'd spray w/ olive oil and spritz with some lemon and/or lime and put in the oven. Pretty tasty.
For me it is Jamaica Beef Patties and sweet Plantains.
I wasn't exposed to much Caribbean food early on, but after traveling a lot I'm glad to have been. Dee-licious.
Believe it or not broccolli, cauliflower, Mexican, Chinese, Italian (besides spaghetti), celery, carrots, pork (besides bacon), bagels and english muffins; just to name a few. My Mother could not afford much beyond basic staples so we ate a lot of hot dogs, hamburger, potatoes, green beans (both from the garden), ham and bean soup, corn bread, regular bread, oatmeal, things like that. Not that I am complaining or dislike any of it we just did not know that other grocery items existed because they were not part of our household. I don't think I ate a taco shell or a tortilla until I was a teenager or early 20's.
Pretty much everything. My mother was a lousy cook, and in the early 60's all the "convenience foods" were just invented, so she went nuts with that kind of stuff. TV dinners, pot pies, Spam, white bread, Hamburger Helper, Tuna Helper, if it said Betty Crocker or Swanson on the label, we ate it. For a special treat we would sometimes get a Kraft pizza mix pizza. Came with the dough you rolled out, a tiny tin of "pizza sauce" and a packet of parmesan cheese your sprinkled on top. My father didn't like anything resembling spaghetti sauce, so we got Franco-American spaghetti or Beef-a-roni only at lunch time. And the vegetables we got, corn, peas, and green beans, were all out of the can. I now eat none of these things.
I never saw a bagel til I got to college!
So, I'd have to say Mexican food is what I eat the most of now that I never had as a kid. Along with fresh green vegetables.
Cous cous and Greek yogurt (I was over 40 before I tried them). I didn't develop a taste for crab legs, lobster and shrimp until I was in my late teens/early 20's. now I love them.
Pretty much anything Cajun. After we married my husband and I lived in southern Louisiana for a few years. I learned to love the spicy mixtures and not ask too many questions about what ingredients were mixed in.
Frankly, my grandmother would have kicked the top out of her casket at the mention of some of the stuff we ate back then.
