Fine dining is fine for certain occasions, but I'm more likely to seek out great food at little-known joints, for the most part.

Hole in the wall = 90% good food, 10% nice ambiance ...
UppityUp place = 90% nice ambiance, 10% good food

Hole in the wall = no horse doovers
(dang, most snobs do not even know how to spell that word right !)

UppityUp place = really small portions of food presented as a way of art on huge plates. (You like that ? Go for it !)

Hole in the wall = Owners know us (the whole family) by first name, give us a hug when we leave.
UppityUp place = they look crooked at me if I do not leave a good tip, because of not so good food or service ...

Last but not least:
Hole in the wall = I can afford to go there often.
UppityUp place = Do I need to comment ?

What are you in the mood for ?

One more thing:
Why do some places advertise *home cooking style* ??
I even have seen one that advertised: *Food like your Mother made* ...
Huh ? How many Mothers knew how to cook ?
Surprisingly, mine did, and she taught me well, so I never go anywhere if their food is something I can cook probably better !

Hole in the wall.

I enjoy fine dining, but sometimes fine dining can be a bit stuffy.

You and my husband. Our children call him the original beach bum. As a 6-month-old baby, he learned to crawl on the sands of a Southern CA beach and continued to spend every day during the first 54 years of his life on the same beach, so it's not an exaggeration.

Not just restaurants, but any event that requires a coat and tie would not have his attendance. I believe he wore a coat and tie only once, on the day of his first wedding, and only because it was held in a church. He wore a coat but sans tie on the second wedding (ours.)

Apples and oranges. I enjoy both, but they are completely different experiences.

For better or worse, the jacket and tie requirement is going by way of the dinosaur. I can't think of any restaurant in Boston that has such a requirement and only a couple left in NYC.

Hole in the wall most of the time....
But if it is fine dining... I love mine at the "Iron Chef's"... especially Morimoto's (chef's Chef aka "Chef of Chefs", z ultimate guru in mine eyes.), 100% in ambiance & 110% +++ in food.
