Did you know you can bake bread in a crock pot?? I bet you didn't even think about it! Now, in Summer you don't really want to turn on your oven, but you would appreciate fresh baked bread. No need to sweat in the hot kitchen.

Just form the dough into a ball and place it on a sheet of parchment paper, then put it in the crock pot, turn the temperature to high and put on the cover. ( a paper towel across the top of the pot under the lid will keep the moisture from "raining" on your bread )
Bake for about an hour or so. To check if done, poke the top of the loaf - it should feel firm, not mushy. (100% whole grain needs a little longer).

When the bread is done, the crust will look like a steamed bun. To make the crust crunchy - just stick your bread for 5 minutes under the broiler or until it is the color you like, with the rack positioned in the middle of the oven. Cool it off before cutting.
( You can use a pound of pre-made refrigerated dough or a fresh batch of bread dough )

Tip:
The first time you use your crock pot for baking bread, please keep an eye on the loaf after about 45 min to make sure it is not over browning on the bottom or not browning at all - adjust your pot if necessary.

Enjoy your crock pot in summer - it's such versatile appliance!

I've used a lot of different utensils for baking, but never thought about using a Crock Pot. Thanks for your always useful tips.
