According to the Peoples Pharmacy and our local news station, yellow mustard helps with leg cramps. People who have problems with leg cramps can keep a small packet of mustard with them or take a teaspoon of the mustard when they have leg cramps. It is thought that the tumeric in mustard is what alleviates the pain.

So, do you just rub it on lightly, or are you supposed to really massage it in?

Why always this face in every post I've seen from you, OpenD?

Because I'm a light hearted guy, that's why!

While I do try to be very helpful wherever I can and to provide information and links where they are called for, and I carefully research and do a lot of fact checking to make sure what I say here is factually correct, I also like a good laugh.

I find playfulness to be conducive to good health and long life, but unfortunately some people just don't see the humor in an online post unless you give them broad hints, so I use the emoticons here fairly liberally to indicate a humorous reference.

In this case, if you are young you might never have heard of poultices called mustard plasters being used to treat joint and muscle pain and swelling, as well as to relieve chest congestion, because they generate a lot of heat. They are an old, old folk remedy which were still popular when I was a kid. They use the very same ground mustard seed that is turned into the popular condiment for hot dogs, albeit without the turmeric, which is mostly used in the food version for its bright yellow color.

So I thought it was funny when the OP suggested treating leg cramps with mustard from the inside, when I was more familiar with using mustard on the outside for pain, and I made that little joke. At least I thought it was funny.

My DH has mustard almost every day, but he still has leg cramps at night. I think if there was a miracle cure for leg, toe, finger, or wherever cramps, someone would know.

Hint. Have his magnesium checked. A lot of prescription and non-prescription drugs reduce magnesium. Low magnesium can often cause cramping.

This is from PERSONAL experience, not my medical background which consists solely of watching Marcus Welby MD reruns.

Great! I should be good tonight after all that mustard i put in the potato salad. Hadn't heard of Tumeric being good for cramps. Heard the potassium in bananas can help prevent cramps. I have been getting these painful leg cramps the last year or so. I'll see how it works. Thanks SXMGirl!

Thank you! I'm all for anything that reduces swelling and mystery cramps. I could care less whether it works inside, outside or upside down! (lol)

I think that I may try a poultice on the tootsie.

My mom swears by it. She gets leg cramps at night and says that eating mustard eases the cramps.
