As crazy a this sounds this meat ball recipie is from a famous NY italian restaurant.For every lb.of meat mix in 3 eggs bread crumbs cooked onions salt pepper oregano.meat balls come out juicy and soft this is the only way we make our meat balls.

Homemade meatballs are better, but I don't mind frozen in a pinch. If you were in Texas, I'd recommend HEB's homestyle meatballs. I prefer them to the other frozen meatball brands.

You BAKE your meatballs? I used to brown them off in oil and then let them simmer in tomato sauce so that the flavors mingle. Browning them off make the stovetop a mess, so I buy ShopRite brand now. The seasoning and texture are very good. Shop Rite brand stuff is sometimes superior to the regular label, and sometimes not. They stopped making their frozen lasagna, which was better than the recognized labels because the manufacturer could no longer make it for the price.

I do not use a real fatty meat. The thing that makes meatballs tender is the amount of breadcrumbs(or oatmeal) in ratio to meat, as well as the fewer eggs the better. The eggs are there just to hold the thing in that ball shape, like a glue. Too many eggs and it comes out tough. I think you might have too many eggs in your recipe, but maybe they don't fry theirs and they come out differently in the oven.

I once bought Mama Lucia turkey meatballs. Oh my God, they were grotesque. First of all, the smell. They smelled horrid. I tried to eat one, but couldn't get past one nibble -- the texture was awful (rubbery? I don't even remember) and the taste was even worse than the smell, if that was even possible. Feh.

So, no, that doesn't answer your question of what are the best (I don't know; after THAT episode, I never tried another frozen meatball made by ANYONE), but I definitely told you about the worst (at least in my opinion).
