Wonder Bread tasted like a flavorless sponge. Once I tasted whole grain bread I never ate Wonder Bread again.
I was never allowed to eat white bread as a kid in the US. My parents fed us the whole wheat bread you sliced yourself, and it was always hard as heck. I wanted to eat wonder bread because you could roll it into balls. I guess I was "lucky."
I don't eat white bread nowadays, in general. But I do enjoy French bread and other white breads on occasion.
As far as the Hostess brands, no way would my parents have bought their "snack" brands. I would probably gag if I ate one myself; I can't imagine all those chemicals, sugar and fat tasting good. Who would feed that stuff to their children?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Hostess was going out of business because of a big dispute with the workers, not because they were losing money and had to close up shop. If that's the case, I would bet that in a matter of weeks or months after they close, that the company will be purchased and that Twinkie et al production will recommence as usual.

Hostess has filed for bankruptcy TWICE in the last decade because they were losing money. One of the two unions, the Teamsters, approved a new contract. The bakery workers went on strike in many locations leading the company to change their filing from a Chapter 11 reorganization to a Chapter 7 liquidation.
I really liked Twinkies as a kid, but I haven't eaten them since. Sometimes I'm tempted to get one from the vending machine, but there are always better snacks in there (donuts!). The thing I would notice most about Hostess going under is not seeing their vendors stock the shelves a work.
I was on my way to try to buy a last box of Ding-Dongs, but before I even got to the store (a quarter-mile away) it dawned on me that I don't eat Hostess more than once every few years, so what's all the fuss? I forgot all about it by the time I arrived and bought lettuce and canned pumpkin. I'm sure they've already been cleaned out of every store in the country anyway.
I have to say that after I heard the announcement of this development on NPR, I drove home from work and put on Zombieland so I could hear Woody Harrelson say angrily that one day soon, "life's little Twinkie gauge is going to go to E." What astounds me is that it happened WITHOUT a zombie apocalypse.
...as well as Twinkies and Ding Dongs. I used to like to nuke them in the microwave for about 3 seconds before eating them.
