I have one thermo bottle which can preserve hot drinking water temperature.
Amazon.com: Thermos Nissan FBB1000P6 34-Ounce Stainless-Steel Vacuum Insulated Briefcase Bottle: Kitchen & Dining

I was wondering if cups are needed when drinking hot water out of the bottle?
The cap of the bottle doesn't seem like a cup for me.

Thanks!

The way I see it, you have three options:

1) Use the supplied cup (if there is one)
2) Use a different cup
3) Drink straight from the thermos.

Am I missing something?

Looking at the photo at the link you supplied, the lid is a small cup, yes, which is pretty much standard for thermos bottles.

The way I see it, you have four options:

1) Use the supplied cup
2) Use a different cup
3) Drink straight from the thermos.
4) Do something else.

The water may be too hot to drink directly.

Also if I am travelling, the place I go may not have cups.

You can drink straight from the bottle but as mentioned, it might be too hot (good thermos can keep stuff hot for hours, that's the point!). I remove the entire top pieces altogether and let it cool down to drinking temp first but depending where you are/what you're doing, this may not be feasible.

Wait for it to cool down or put cooler water in to begin with.

Then bring your own or use the Thermos lid.

Seriously, what am I missing here?

I have one like that. The lid doubles as a cup, it just doesn't have a handle. It even says so in the product description; This bottle comes equipped with its own built-in, insulated stainless steel serving cup, so there is no need to pack an additional cup, allowing you to enjoy your beverage anywhere."
