I co-worker had brought in some jam (frozen) for everyone. I grabed a couple jars and set them in my office to thaw them and forgot to take them home with me. The Marionberry and Strawberry Jam has been sitting out for 4 days, is it still good to eat? I feel kinda stupid for asking but I have always kept the store bought stuff in the fridge and am not sure if the homemade stuff has to be kept cold. thanks!

No one wants to answer looks like.

I wouldn't eat it unless I was the one who made it and KNEW if it was OK from the get go. Were the jars sealed shut? Did they use citric acid? Probably not if it was frozen jam. How cold was the room it was left in?

Tossing it was the right choice. Once freezer jam is thawed, it keeps in the fridge for a week, but not at all at room temperature.

I would have at least given it some scrutiny before tossing it. With fruit jams, the usual spoilage suspect is mold and/or fermentation. Mold is easy to see; fermentation is easy to smell.

The pectin and sugar act as preservatives. Freezer jam, once thawed, should be refrigerated and consumed within several weeks; however, mold will not necessarily grow even if you leave it out of the fridge for a bit.
