Been using it for over 20 years and it's readily available at any Asian grocer for decades and even American supermarkets. It's an ordinary condiment. Not great on everything I use mostly in soups, dip for chicken, and add to marinades. Frank's and Tabasco's are better for everything else.
I actually prefer the garlic diced one than the regular syrupy one.
I like Sriracha, but I don't get the huge hype about it. I use it primarily for Asian-style dishes and some soups. Like you, OP, I find Tabasco to be much more versatile in food.
Though I will admit to making a shrimp and chicken marinade with a lot of sriracha, some lime, garlic, and a touch of sugar that's absolutely wonderful. And now I know what's for dinner. Yum.
I think the new popularity comes from a bunch of stupid jerks complaining about the smell coming from the plant where it's made and their demands which are forcing the company to seek a new location.
Thanks Californians. They'll probably move to Texas where lots of people are lining up to work for them. A family business that's been there for generations forced to relocate because of ignorant residents of the Socialist Republic of Kaleefornya.
When I lived in Cali about 15 years ago I discovered it for myself. I went about 5 years using on tons of stuff and would see it everywhere. My wife doesn't like spice in her food, so I have rarely used it in the last decade.

Hey now!
I love Sriracha..but I don't see where it's really hyped up anymore. It's another great condiment in a long line of them as far as I see. It's great, but there are so many to choose from - I love that people are embracing spicy sauces. I don't remember having so many options growing up. Tabasco seemed to be it!
I use it on everything and have been using it for longer than I can remember.
I think its availability in grocery stores plus maybe facebook or some social media exposure has led many to learn what it is or make it seem like a fad.
I always get a big bottle and it lasts forever even though I use it on everything; I can assure you, it is no fad in my book
I put it on everything too. From pizza to sandwiches.
