We don't order pizza delivery very often, but when we do I am never sure how much is an appropriate tip to give the delivery person. How much do you tip? The normal pizza we order is about $12. Same question for the Chinese food delivery guy. I do not want to be cheap, but I also dont want to "overtip" Thanks.
I usually give them five to seven dollars. I know they already add a delivery charge, but I am never certain if the driver receives the delivery charge. I order pizza from the same place and my order is always promptly delivered, fresh and hot. Lately, I have had the same delivery person each time. He does a great job of getting my pie here in less than the promised time.
IMO, it's not generally about the size of the order, but how far you are and how inclement the weather is. What's it worth to you to not have to go out yourself?
The places I order from don't have a built-in delivery charge. I usually start with $3 as I'm only a little over a mile away. If it sucks outside to the point where I don't want to go out, I'll go $5 or more.
Never more than $3, unless it required going out in seriously inclement weather (and, typically, I won't order delivery in really crappy weather, but sometimes I've had to for work functions, etc.). Everyplace I've ordered from also charges a delivery fee.
I know they don't, but the fact remains that I'm already paying for service separately from the price of the food, and by paying a delivery fee and a gratuity, I'm paying for service twice.
I know this has been a topic before, and I know a lot of people don't agree with me, but, honestly, that's a lot of service charges for pizza, which is ordinarily not even that good. It's also a major reason I extremely rarely order pizza for delivery.
I don't know how it works now, but when I was in the pizza business the d-boy got to keep the delivery charges and the store would make it up if it came to below minimum wage for the shift.
It's been ages since I've ordered pizza to be delivered, but I think it's worth a tip if I do.
