PS: you can buy a raw chicken and roast it yourself for less than I pay for mine hot and ready to serve right off the spit. I've never met a raw whole chicken I couldn't ruin, however, and so I buy mine already prepped.
One of my favorites is chicken pulao as I grew up with. Boil a whole chicken with sweet spices, drain off the broth and save it. Take the chicken meat off the bone, cook rice in the reserved broth as you fry the chicken meat in butter with cashews. Mix this into the rice as it's finishing cooking (and you put raisins and carmelized onions in it too). Serve the pulao with a sweet tomato chutney or Major Grey's chutney. MMMM

Wow, sounds really yummy!!! I usually do not like sweet anything in my meat, but that does sound good.
Not sure whether this goes here or in Frugal thread, but will try here.
Has anyone heard of Leanne Brown and her free online cookbook Good & Cheap?
Designed for SNAP particiapants living on a food budget of $4/day, there are some frugal, seasonal recipes that many of us might be interested in..for example, I want to try her eggplant, tomato and garlic pasta recipe.
What a great find! I did not expect it to be so beautifully formatted. It looks to be a great resource for anyone at any budget. I have it bookmarked to inspect more carefully before I head to the neighborhood farmer's market this weekend to load up on seasonal produce. I saw several dishes I can't wait to try.
As for a really, really frugal meal my family adores, we eat mujadara regularly during the cold months. Simple and tasty. We typically top it with a dollop sour cream.
Kasha Varnishkes is another frugal dish that is extremely satisfying in the winter.
