Yup, I always scam on the marked down meat....never had any bad meat.

Once you throw well-wrapped meat into the freezer.....it basically goes into
suspended-animation.

The wife ask what is for dinner and I tell her I won't know until I get to the store.

I prefer the term 'Discount Meat'.

So, today, we went to Sam's. Granted, we are expecting a lot of company over Christmas, so we bought larger amounts of meat that we usually do, but we bought a whole pork loin and boneless chicken for $1.99 a pound. Ground beef (not the tube stuff, but the fresh ground) for $3.99. Also a 5# pot roast for about $4. a pound.
It is possible to buy cheap meat that is good quality if you are willing to do the homework.

Sorry but those are expensive! Meat has gone up like crazy and I guess we are starting to accept the higher prices.

Remember when brisket was a cheap cut of meat? I just put one in the crockpot that was $20 in the cheap bin. That's a real splurge for me!

Second, there are certain things I don't look to find the absolutely cheapest option for. Borderline meat, used mattresses, medication from questionable Internet sites... all not worth savings a few bucks. If a discount lawn mower doesn't work, that's one thing, as I'm not actually putting that in my body (and it doesn't contain things that could contaminate my body without a lot of effort.)
In San Francisco area the Animal rights people were after the asian markets a few years ago because of their treatment of live fish and their practice of ripping shells off live turtles. And yes, I am saying that with a straight face, sadly.

This whole thread reminds me of my experience at a church potluck one evening. An old guy was trying to impress me with his dumpster diving skills from behind Trader Joe's. I avoided him and his food; I don't do potlucks anymore!

My DH is vegatarian so when I feel the need for meat, I like the roasted chickens at Costco so he doesn't have to smell the burning flesh. Veggies are great and good for you.

I remember when Chuck Steak was dirt cheap and not that many people ate it....too lowbrow, even for cheapoes. I love Chuck....but the price is just crazy, so sad that beef and many other meats are getting more and more expensive.

I remember not too long ago, you could buy turkey legs on sale for 69 cents a pound. NOW, gosh, I regularly see legs being sold for $2.39 - $2.59 a pound.

I remember cutting 1.29lb chuck steaks, and .99lb assorted pork chops

we even had a sale on burger .99lb

leg quarters were .19lb

the demand for export beef is high, keeping the markets high, along with cost of feed , the droughts,
also keep in mind, 30 yrs ago, half of the workers at the processing plants were probly illegal immigrants /undocumented workers making cheap money/wages
not like that today

I get it when I can, especially if its beef which is so expensive usually. Meat is usually reduced on Sundays here and you have to get there early to beat all the old grannies who try and grab as much of it as they can.

I don't get the reduced chicken any more, got put off after buying it once and opened the box and there was a horrid smell.

I got an $18 3.5lb roast today for $6 because it was on manager's special. The sell by date isn't for 4 more days, either. I know what I'm throwing in my crock pot in the morning.
