Seeing a post in the "what's for dinner" thread made me think about things that are almost rules for many of us.

Two that pop to my mind right now are:

Pork chops or pork roast must be served with apples of some kind (baked, sauce, etc)
Dinner must contain something green (salad or veggie)

I'm sure I've got others that i'm not remembering right now. Any unwritten food rules in your world?

Fish and cheese do not go together (exceptions, but not many)

PS: I have NEVER eaten any pork with apples

I was going to write the same thing: Do not push cheese on seafood.

My #1 rule is: If you have cookies, you must share them with me.

I'm not a big fish eater but the combo doesn't really sound appealing. Unless you're talking about a tuna melt sandwich.

Sandwiches are for lunch, not dinner.
Soup can be lunch OR dinner.
Breakfast foods can not be served at dinner. (My husband's rule, I'd be fine with it.)
"Themes" must continue through all foods served together. E.g. refried beans go with enchiladas, but never with spaghetti.

Yeah, sides have to be flavor affiliates. No curry cauliflower with sushi and such.

1. All Hot Dogs in natural casing MUST be gently boiled or steamed.

2. Imported pasta only or at least 100% durum semolina.

3. Chicken on the bone whenever possible

4. Pizza well-done always

Hmm, I don't feel particularly constrained by anything which has already been mentioned. Eggs for dinner? Fine. Tuna melt? Fine. No green vegetables? Fine. (We eat a LOT of vegetables, but there are many that are not green. Cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, butternut squash, beets, to name only a few).

One of my rules, though is that bread is NOT eaten with meals that are already mostly bread/starch. Garlic bread with spaghetti or bread sticks with pizza is a big no no.

Exception# 1 - Breaded/battered fried filet sandwich, American cheese, tomato and tartar sauce. YUMMMMMM!

Exception# 2 - Linguine with clam sauce. Parm or romano. Delish!

I love starch -- bread is my favorite food group -- but you've got a great point here, especially about break sticks with pizza. Totally redundant.

I was at a restaurant that served rice AND potatoes with the meat. "What starch would you like with your other starch?"
