I'd been "taught" that the correct spelling is "bleu cheese" but that's not because I'm from Montreal -- really, I barely speak French. Yet, I'm always a bit proud when I see an American write "bleu cheese" instead of "blue cheese."

I'm an editor, so it did make me curious as to what the "correct" spelling is: bleu cheese (as I knew it to be) or blue cheese (as is sometimes written on this forum and elsewhere).

In case you were also curious:

The Grammarphobia Blog: Is the cheese blue or bleu?

I was surprised.

I think it is bleu but depending which device I am using my autocorrect sometimes corrects it to blue. Sometimes (ok all the time) I am too lazy to correct my autocorrect.

But did you guys read the article that I linked? It said:

You’ll be dismayed to hear this, but the phrase “blue cheese” showed up in English a century and a half before the Frenchified “bleu cheese” version.
I was pretty surprised about that.

Ok after reading (!) the article it gets me thinking. I am guessing people use bleu as a kind of elitist description. What you're not using the French word? Plebeian! Or something to that effect.

Thanks for asking, everything is fine. He's autistic and sometimes his brain doesn't like to stop working. If he can't sleep he will wake me for company.

I used to spell it "bleu" until I read a few comments like that - now it's always "blue."
