Eggshells and crushed ice in the pan, swirl around until burnt parts are gone.

You can start with water and salt over a medium heat and let it come to a boil. After cooling and rinsing out, then either soak in original Dawn or a dishwasher tablet. I like original Dawn because that is what we use to clean birds that have been soaked in oil.

Fill the bottom with warm water and throw in a dryer sheet ( fabric softener) and let it soak for a couple of hours.

I use a squirt of auto dishwasher gel (for the dishwasher machine) and a small amount of hot water. let it sit but not dry. pour some boiling water in and it should clean up easy. Otherwise E Z off oven cleaner

"Ajax - Really Cuts The Grease!"

Seriously, soaking is your friend. Water is the "universal solvent". We never scrape or scrub. Easier on the cookware, too!

I'm thinking this wouldn't be an issue with a nonstick pan .

Depends, I have seen some people burn the hell out of a nonstick pan. My mother had to throw one out because she burnt food to it, had almost 1/2 thick of burnt to it.

Yep - I've seen the same, but they were never salvageable (the pans, that is - the people were fine).

I sadly know quite a few people around here that can't cook very well, some of which should never be allowed near a stove *coughcoughburntwatercough.* Fortunately I learned to cook from my mother before she got to the point of not being able to.
