Oh... I think Voodoo donuts in Portland was the first to do a bacon maple bar, but trendy donut shops across the US are coming up with their own version. Varsity Donuts in Manhattan has a version, which is meh.. not my favorite.. but I like some of their creations.

Compared to what other chain that size?

And the last I heard, KK was the only chain where you could still get a hot doughnut, all the rest are made off site.

One clarification - the news quote in the original post is a bit misleading, actually incorrect - The Krispy Kreme company is not "partnering" with anyone regarding this new bacon hot dog doughnut. It's being offered at a minor league baseball field in Wilmington, Delaware using Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

From the New York Daily News:

Don’t blame the donut chain for this artery atrocity. The company told the Daily News that the team is simply using its signature donuts to make its new snack.
From the newspaper in Krispy Kreme's hometown: Team needs name for hot dog on Krispy Kreme doughnut - Winston-Salem Journal: State Region Ap

While it sounds weird there are many accepted similar food combos which makes this seems pretty normal. There is the McGriddle that someone mentioned before, also chicken and waffles is nearly a requirement at most brunches, and chicken and donut places are starting to crop up. Another popular sandwich is the Monte Cristo which combines meat, jam, and a "sweet" bread, usually french toast. Then there is the "Luther" burger which uses donuts as the bun.

Yeah, I still don't like them. Actually, when I ate doughnuts, we got ours from a local shop. Hot and fresh.
