Beer, sugary drinks, donuts, cookies, or chips are tried and true, and frugal, if not boring and unhealthy.

If I'm splurging more, then perhaps guacamole and chips, hummus, or even fruit, such as berries, or clementine.

I make a good macaroni salad so that's my fall back dish if nobody tells me otherwise. If nothing else I get to eat it because the only kind I like is MINE. Nobody else, no store, no deli...just MINE.

Unless requested for a special item, I usually bring Tomato Surprise. Then I get a couple/two/tree pounds of shrimp, boil 'em up and bring them chilled. When people say there aren't any tomatoes, I tell them, "That's the surprise."

But in the case of family gatherings, they request my potato salad. It's everybody's favorite.

I have a friend that hosts a big potluck each year. He sends the invites out through the service "evite" which has a way to set up to see the list of what people are bringing. So helpful - then there is not an abundance of one thing.

BRING SHISH KABOBS when no one is in control of who brings what. You cannot go wrong with them, and if everyone just brings desserts, chips and appetizers, you have something that is REAL to eat.

Always the shish kabobs. With chicken, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper or mini peppers, mushrooms, pineapple, and onion wedges. BBQ them at home. Coat with pineapple juice, Worchestershire, dash of pepper sauce. Then bring on their skewers.

NO ONE else will bring this. Unless they read City-Data.

Are these people cooks, or is everyone likely to bring carryout food? It really depends. Is someone coordinating, or is it a free for all?
Need more info. If its a free for all, I'll probably just stay home. All there will be to eat is chips and salsa, or potato chips and onion dip.

I have seen my sister-in-law bring cooked chicken legs to an outdoor picnic.
