Are there better-tasting bananas in other parts of the world that can’t be exported to the US?

Yes. I am not sure if they cannot be exported, but the bananas I have eaten in Southeast Asia, Turkey, and Central America are better. They tend to be smaller and fresher. The freshnesss definitely he,ps, but the breed seems to be different as well.

That is a good thing, as I understand it there is a global blight attacking the Cavendish banana, which is the staple banana for North America.

They are overwhelmingly the same variety. I have bought red bananas and Manzanos bananas on occasion.

I had Thai bananas a couple of times, bought from a natural foods coop in western WA. They were the tastiest bananas I’ve ever had. That is what our standard banana (the Cavendish) lacks: intense fruity banana flavor, with a hint of tartness. Yes, tartness. To me, that is what helps give fruits their unique tastes. The Cavendish is merely sweet, good but bland.

Maybe the small size and dark, variegated skin color of the Thai banana makes US customers avoid it.

Do you think the same thing about apples? Oranges? Peppers? Tomatoes?

We have multiple types of all of these, and I enjoy switching between varieties just to do so. Just because you are familiar with a thing, that doesn’t mean it is universally the best thing

Best apples are from the USA and available Nov-Mar. After that, those USA apples that were in cold storage have lost their sugar. So the stores get apples from Southern Hemisphere in spring and early summer which are just ripening and should be as sweet as our apples were in fall and winter but they ain't.

Best tomatoes were the ones I used to grow, but as for commercial, I don't see any difference between USA and south of the border.

Peppers, meh.

I don't think I've had an orange other than those from Ca. or Fla.

My husband grew 30 varieties of bananas when we lived in Hawaii. His favorites were the berry bananas, but they all kind of tasted the same to me.
