My mom used to have a big shallow wooden bowl she'd line with a linen napkin and serve rolls from (if you folded the napkin over the rolls, they'd stay warm longer.)
If the bowls have ever been used for salads (with dressing), the wood will retain oils and flavors from that, and would limit "wet" use for say, cereals. Thick soups could served in them, and chilis. But nothing with a 'delicate' flavor that oils and seasonings would spoil (unless dry).
Other than that, you could use wooden bowls to serve just about anything...and some people do.

Lol, oh yeah--that napkin.
Mom was always lining those little wicker-type baskets with napkins. Years ago,.I was helping to set up the table at work for a party, and one woman brought a bag with those little bowls and an assortment of snacks. I promptly found a few napkins and got busy. She said,."You do that, too?"
Lol.
