I mean do you follow the directions or do it your own way?

When I cook macaroni and cheese for example,I put the mac and cheese in the pot straight away and look @ the clock and time 7 mins...... Usually its done (I dont wait for it to boil first)

What I find amazing is.... 2 times I have made 2 mac and cheeses together (2 boxs in the pot @ the same time as I was really hungry) and they cooked in the same time! (The whole pot was ready in 7 mins)

I love mac and cheese!!

When you cook pasta in water, it doesn't usually take longer for more pasta to cook.

I always let the water boil first because otherwise the noodles are gummy. When I cook rice, though, I'll put the rice and water in the pan at the same time, even if it says to boil the water first.

Lol.... macaroni with cheese from the box... you call it "cooking"?
Try to cook something from scratch, then report back.
HINT: cooking water doesn't count

Back to topic:
Unexperienced people cook using recipes, and stick to the exact measurements and ingredients. Also people who know how to cook, but try new things for the first time, tend to follow recipes.
Experienced people cook things their own way, sometimes experimenting, but mostly - they just know how, how long, what to add, how to season, they know the techniques, the use of right pots, etc.

Well, in the beginning, I would do the recipe the first time and then adjust it every time after that to my own taste/liking.

Now I know ahead of time what things are likely to taste like (experience with flavor combos, cooking times, etc), so I
a. either don't bother to make the recipe
or
b. adjust it ahead of time to make it better

Mac and cheese out of a box is nowhere near a 'meal.'
So make this instead.
Worth it. It's FANTASTIC.
I wouldn't even wander off the recipe much.

... boil a lot of water, add plenty of kosher salt, then add the pasta, and cook until al dente - that's the old fashioned, classic way. But the truth is - you don't need a large volume of water to cook pasta, and the water does not even have to be boiling.
Try starting with cold water and a frying pan to quickly cook perfect pasta every time, and have just enough water left in the pan for a sauce.
This is definitely a good way to save a lot of time, energy and water, especially now, in hot Summer.
