....many traditions surrounding "Fat Tuesday" "Shrove Tuesday" "Fassncht" "Pancake Tuesday" - the day many Christians from a variety of ethnicities and geographical locations splurge the day before the beginning of Lent - a 40 day period before Easter when some Christians abstain from sweet, and rich foods.

When I lived in PA for a few years, our church observed Fassnacht - where we indulged of a potato based fried confection of the same name - Fassnacht. Fassnacht is also the name of the celebration, where there is lots of eating, drinking, games and good natrured pranks.

Here in Ohio, Pasczki (delicious Polish donuts with a variety of fillings) are available everywhere. And they are so good! We have Paczki and Polka celebrations.

I just finished a Pasczki. Soooo good.

So what are you enjoying and overindulging in tonight?

Welllll, we never did much for fat tuesday. In CT, it was nonexistant. Since we've been here in south Louisiana, it's been just a day off. I think we've done the parades maybe 3 times in our 16 years here.

Food? I guess barbecue, but we don't usually do anything special for mardi gras food wise.

Lent? Now that's a different story.

Though we both belong to faith traditions that observe Lent, neither of us do anything in particular as a Mardi Gras/Shrove Tuesday/Etc.-related dining tradition.

Tonight, we had leftovers. I had a baked potato with the works and some broccoli salad, husband had some pasta bake, leftover sausge, and a tossed salad.

We had pancakes for dinner. SO had gotten bacon to do breakfast for dinner sometime this week. He didnt realize that Wednesday and Friday are no meat days, so tonight was breakfast night.

I was going to stop and see if there were any king cakes left, but we're having bad weather tonight so I wanted to get home quick.

We had a Mardi Gras dinner on Sunday.

We had beads for everyone, and feathered masks for decor. Classic jazz playing. I made a pot of sausage/chicken/shrimp gumbo with from-scratch roux, served over rice. Green tossed salad.

For dessert a King Cake from a local bakery, with a little plastic baby baked into it. Whoever finds the baby in their piece of cake hosts the Mardi Gras dinner next year. My husband found the baby, but someone else volunteered to take it, so we'll be guests next year instead of hosts.

It was a fun evening and really not very much trouble. I love one-dish make-ahead meals.

Had no idea it was fat Tuesday last night. Anyway we don't celebrate, however this time of year St. Joseph's pastries will be available. I love those!

We had a high-carb couple of days previously so I skipped the usual pancakes in favor of something high-protein. In our previous location, we always went to our church for the youth-group pancake dinner. Here, I've been making the pancakes myself. Just not this year.
