I have room in my small kitchen for one or the other. I have a microwave now that I got 2nd hand for $5 and I am beginning to see why. It tends to arc when heating anything besides water. I am about to get rid of it.
I use the microwave mostly to heat water for coffee, which I can easily do on the stove in a pan. Also to warm up leftovers. I am thinking a toaster oven would replace using the range oven, while a microwave replaces (mostly) using the range burners.
Am I missing anything? What would you miss if the microwave vanished from your kitchen? I have had a toaster oven before and found it quite useful.
I really wouldn't miss my M/W, and I haven't had a toaster oven for years. However, we aren't cooking for one, so I'm sure you will get good use from a decent toaster oven. Remember, don't store bread on top of the toaster oven.
I pretty much just use the microwave for frozen dinners (when I don't feel like cooking - or reheating leftovers. A toaster oven can take the place of regular oven for a small 1-2 person household, you can bake, reheat, make toast, etc. Sounds like a toaster oven is better for you if you have to choose only 1.
I'd miss the microwave terribly.. Especially during the winter, I survive oftentimes off the single-serve soups/chili that is just so easy to heat up in the microwave, and do much of my cooking in a crock pot, which means I have lots of leftovers to reheat.
Toaster ovens are wonderful.. But if I had to choose.. I'd need the microwave more.
Last year I had no coffee pot or microwave until my DH finished some work out of state. I didn't miss either one am frustrated by the amount space they now take up. Oh well, I guess that is married life. We lived most of our lives without a microwave and did just fine.
This is probably what I'd buy in your situation. Cuisinart does make good small electrics in my experience.
