There’s also sweet potato tots, and more recently cauliflower tots.

Went to school here.

I don't think we had tater tots here though. I'm guessing that they started out in some region and spread from there. They didn't start around here.

We had mac and cheese, American chop suey, sloppy Joe's, pizza, and fish sticks, among other things. I don't have nostalgia for anything that we ate in the school cafeteria. Nothing. And I missed the boat on tater tots!

EDITED: Just looked it up and Tater Tots were invented in Oregon. West Coast. 1953. Must have taken a while to spread across the country to where I live. Happy eating!

They're cheap, quick and, um - portable.
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to bring up Napoleon Dynamite! Love it!

I've got the real answer... the craze is tied to the increase in air fryer ownership. Tater tots are tailor-made to cook in an air fryer. Cooking them that way is so much faster than preheating an oven to 400+ degrees.

I didn't realize there was a craze.

I've been eating tater tots forever, not even often.
They crisp up better and taste better than oven baked fries. (to me anyway) I'll not deep fry in my kitchen anymore.

I just had some the other night in fact, topped with chili and cheese sauce to go along with the chili cheese dogs I made.
But it wasn't because of any craze, it just sounded good and alas it was very good..

I love tater tots. Got introduced to them with TV dinners. I hadn't seen them in forever until i moved to Georgia . I order them when I can now.

Yeah, I recently tore a recipe for a tater tot breakfast casserole out of a magazine, and I haven't made it yet partially because I fear I'd treat it as a single serving.

I did a breakfast casserole with tator tots, I did everything short of grab the whole thing, crouch in the corner and growl at the rest of the household.
