yup, and a Caveat, you can not put a Plaintain in a blender.

For those using the word “pretentious”, what pretense is it you think the chef is trying to make?

To me... there's a difference between throwing all the food in one pile on a plate or in a blender, placing it nicely for a nice presentation on the plate or placing the asparagus as a tepee with a radish carved into a rosette and gold leaf coated spiraled lemon rind placed just so to envelop the creation and a drizzle of virgin tears dropped in the shape of a diamond on the plate. Just because I or some others don't find much enticing about the artsy presentation described lastly, doesn't mean we need to just throw franks and beans in a pot and be pocketed into that little box.

I guess my annoyance is that I think food should be about nourishing the body, and the rest is pretentious. I cannot get excited about an artfully arranged carrot topped with a poof of smoke.

If I want theater, I’ll go to the theater. If I want art, I’ll go to a gallery. If I’m hungry I’ll go to a nice steakhouse.

How do you feel about artsy food?-valentines-day-steakjpeg.jpg

To each his own. Casseroles or "add a can of ..." do not happen in my kitchen. I grew up with food being plated and continued that tradition. No butchered pies here but portion sized tartlets. No colored plates, no paper napkins, no plastic glasses (hot tub is the only exception). Having had a very picky eater as father an equally picky SO and the pleasure of working with some of those guys but unfortunately not in the kitchen - a simple well presented meal consisting of good ingredients and appropriate cooking deserves to be presented accordingly. Some call that art we call it dinner. If paying for it means the cost of ingredients - life is too short to eat bad food.
Food as nourishment only. Fuel for body. Try MREs for a week. No hot sauce, nothing but water to drink. Report back please.

Paintings are kind of bland and chewy.

I pass Has anyone tried to turn Madonna's dress into rouladen? That would be art and a labor of love.

Practically speaking, we shouldn't be eating creative foods by chefs or our hosts, because they spent alot of time handling the food, touching it, re-arranging it, etc. Who knows how clean their hands and utensils were. Basic preparation of food is best.

Being adverse to food porn or food as an art-form, is understandable because it is pretentious.
