My mother's famous four layered chocolate cake, with whipped cream between the layers and chocolate frosting. It pretty much became everyone's favorite B-day cake so she made plenty in her lifetime.[SIZE=3][SIZE=3]

They made a birthday cake for our dog every year, but not for me.

It was reality. The dog was a wanted member of the family. There was no uncertainty about it, so it was easy to deal with it and never expect or hope for things that would never come. There's millions of children living on the streets around the world on their own, who have it much worse.
Mine was just a regular box cake mix which suited me fine. Something funny about birthday "cakes" is my dad's favorite dessert was banana pudding, so every now and then my mother would make a banana pudding for his "cake". He loved it.
Once my own children were old enough to make a decision, I began the tradition that the birthday person could choose whatever dessert they wanted. They chose pie as often as cake. A few times it was brownies or a giant cookie. Our daughter did want chocolate mousse one year. There was always ice cream though
Don't have to worry about it, Debsi, because there's nothing left the second day.
When my daughter was little I used to make her an angel food cake cut in three layers and frosted with a combination of strawberry jello, cool whip and well-drained crushed pineapple. That held up really well and made a huge, fluffy cake.
One year when her friends were about ten we made individual cakes at the party. They loved that. I got several kinds of batter and they poured it into ice cream cones and baked. There were a variety of frostings and sprinkles for them to decorate with. Messy but fun.
LOL you guys, but my family is not large enough to finish a cake in a day, at least we sure don't want to do that cause we both need to drop a little baby weight.
My mom made a chocolate cherry cake that was much beloved by everyone in our family for our birthdays...now, it would be about 10x too sweet for me, but as kids, we couldn't get enough.
Every year until I was about 15, I asked my Dad to bring home a Baskin-Robbin's Ice Cream Cake. I haven't had one in almost 40 years now, but they sure were a treat back then!
German chocolate cake. Sometimes, I would request a pie, always an apple pie, lemon meringue or peach pie.
Cake was always a tossup between coconut and German chocolate. But often I too would ask for pie. Usually pecan.
