Boardwalk fries. Drive to the closest boardwalk and find the fries stand with the line. Heaven in a cardboard cup, with malt vinegar. No cheese ever. I love cheese but there is a time and a place.
Chip trucks in Ontario. They just have these parked chip trucks that have someone inside making fries from real potatoes. You can get other things, like hot dogs and peameal sandwiches and sometimes chicken fingers, but they are called chip trucks because chips/fries are the main thing.
Best fries are Belgian Frites. Whoever ate those would never want "french" fries again.
I don't think any American chain restaurant or fast food serves Belgian fries.
It must been a long time ago you had those.
They tasted real great because..... They used horse fat in the oil..
But nowadays it is no longer allowed.
I lived in the Netherlands about 10 miles from Belgium. Still go there 6 times a year and the fries are just average.

I will say that was the ONLY regular, sit down restaurant within 20 miles of Beresford, SD. We weren't that critical, because, where the hell is food around here. It was endearing, and good.
So since it's the ONLY restaurant in 20 miles, it's a little hard to be choosy. ;D
At one time, Wendy's had the best fries of the chains. But then, some number of years ago, they changed their recipe, and they quickly became the worst. I actually avoided Wendy's for a number of years because of this. More recently, they've gotten better, though they're still not as good as they once were. McDonald's fries have always been good, so I'd say they're the best of the choices offered. Burger King's fries have always been consistently mediocre.
As for other places, I love the waffle fries of Chick-fil-A. And the steak fries of Red Robin. And the crinkle fries of Del Taco.
I agree Wendy's fries were the best before they changed them. My fav now is crinkle fries at Zaxbys. Next Chick-fil-A waffle fries
A local BBQ restaurant has crinkle fries that are good if the cook them extra crispy where some of them are saturated with the oil and crispy. But you have to pay extra for well done fries.
