I don't intend this to be a poll but more of a discussion. Since the 1990s, red velvet cake has been considered a Christmas dessert. However, since the 2010s, many associate it with Valentine's Day. So, I was wondering, do you think red velvet cake should be for Christmas or Valentine's Day?
I personally prefer red velvet for Christmas and strawberry cake for Valentine's, but that is just me. I just think of Christmas as a "red" holiday and Valentine's Day as a "pink" holiday. Both cakes pair well with cream cheese frosting, although for Christmas sometimes I dye the frosting green.
FYI--my mother has been making red velvet cake since the 70's. It's cake. It doesn't need a holiday.
The last time we had a group of people for Christmas I made homemade (no box) chocolate cake with dark chocolate & peppermint ganache filling. It was frosted with vanilla frosting and decorated with crushed candy canes.
I think of it more as a Valentine's day cake
When I've made it, that's when I make it around Valentine's day. When I think Christmas cake I think of a Buche de Noel (Yule log cake) which I make yearly for Christmas.

For me, I always make strawberry cake for Valentine's Day (the original bona fide Valentine's Day cake).
