I see a lot of super fancy birthday cakes that have fondant icing. Fondant tastes terrible. But the cakes look pretty. So which do you prefer? A super pretty cake even if it takes kind of icky or a good cake that less fancy?

Good cake, less fancy. Every time!

I like stabilized whipped cream as 'icing' and it can be made to look quite nice.

What's the point of cake that tastes bad?

I want good taste, but then I am not doing a spectacular birthday party with 50 invited guests that I need to impress. Nobody is taking selfies with my birthday cake.

I don't like bakery cakes because they always taste like cake mix and I don't like the taste of cake mix or the taste of canned frosting.

My son's favorite is pineapple upside down cake and that looks very nice and tastes good, too. That's what he always gets for his birthday. But still, even though it looks delicious, no one has ever taken a selfie with one of them.

Umm, yeah. If looks are the main thing, have some fancy icing work done on a plastic toy!

Ah, you have good timing. My birthday is right around the corner. I don't do cake, whether fancy or plain. I want an apple crisp for my special day.

I like whipped cream frosting or chocolate ganache. When a cake has buttercream or fondant I eat the cake and leave the icing or frosting on my plate.

A good bakery isn't using mixes or canned frosting.

My daughter took a couple of cake-decorating classes at Michael's with her friends when she was younger, and learned to cover cakes with fondant and all kinds of fancy decorations. The problem of course is just what the OP said, that stuff tastes terrible. So I agree that over-the-top decorated cakes are really just to ooh and ahh and take pictures of. If people want to spend money on a cake that is just for show, that's fine, but at least they should also have an edible cake for their guests.

I enjoy most frosting as long as it is not canned. Canned frosting is gross. Homemade buttercream, cream cheese frosting, etc. are great. I'm definitely not one of those people who requests a center piece of a sheet cake, or scrapes the frosting off and leaves it on the side of the plate.

Your question is presuming that everyone agrees with your dislike of fondant... I happen to love the taste of (well-made) fondant! So I'll take window A and B, thanks.

But the thing a lot of folks do for weddings is to have a "display cake" made with fondant, then a sheet cake for actual consumption. They'll also serve both most of the time, but having the sheet cake means spending less $$ on the expensive display one.
