Shake Shack is pretty much undeniably better. I really enjoy Shake Shack.
But I also really enjoy a Checkerburger and the price of shake shack is just astronomical compared to In-N-Out, let alone Checkers.
IDK. I had shake-shack once. I can't recall the price, but two burgers, a fries to share, and two iced tea's were $40+ IIRC. After that, I really couldn't even focus on how good or bad it tasted. $40 for mediocre prepared fast food (in a North Carolina Suburb, no-less).
Shake Shack is better quality overall because you get what you've paid for. It's consistent vs In&Out or 5 guys. I've gone to all of them, I rather go to Bobby Flay's Burger place but that's not everywhere yet.
West Coaster, and we didn't get Shake Shacks out here until a couple of years ago. I've had both and while I like Shake Shack for a change once in a while, I'll still take In n Out.
In-N-Out is good. It's still assembly-line food. And the cult following it has (emphasis on the word cult) is just weird.
Shake Shack is even better. And for about $20 for a burger/fries/shake, it damn well better be! For that price I could have a real individually-made burger somewhere that has more atmosphere than a food court. But it too is still assembly-line food.
Going to a Shake Shack today. Oddly, there is only one within about 100 miles from here, and it is at a horse racing track. The burgers are consistently delicious, and the fries and shakes are great. The shakes are so rich and creamy they are almost a meal unto themselves.
However, after eating I feel I have to jog home and go on a salad-only diet for a month!
I don’t eat fries, so that part of the menu has no interest to me. Comparing just the sandwich, In-n-out sells a perfectly balanced burger at a reasonable price. It’s served fresh and customers know exactly what they’re getting. I’ve tried Five Guys, Carls, Smashburger, etc. and other than the larger portion of meat, their burgers are often a greasy, sloppy mess. I don’t have to reach for the Tums after eating at INO.

Shake Shack, by far. We have no In N Out here, but we tried them in California. I will say that their staff is very well trained and motivated, but the food just can't compare to Shake Shack, which is well worth the higher prices.
Had both, Shake Shack because it's just higher quality ingredients. Burgers are very simple, a juicy patty cooked fresh and not from frozen and yet so many places fails at making a simple burger great. I would never eat burgers from BK, Wendys, or McD because their beef just doesn't taste juicy at all.
Shake Shack has better milkshakes. In N Out shakes are way too thick, and sucking them through a straw is not pleasant. You'd be better off scooping it with a spoon.
As far as burgers and fries go, along with value for the money, In N Out wins and it's not close.
