Overheard a kid ask this question in regards to chicken salad sandwich. Got me wondering about other “salads” like ham, tuna, egg, and potato salads. Why were they called a salad?

And then there are word salads. When you're trying to say something but it comes out all jumbled.

A salad can mean whatever you want with different ingredients jumbled together

Fruit salad .. is one of my favs ..

I have an appetizer called a tenderloin salad … beef tenderloin marinated tips with some
Different cheese crumbles
I still get special requests for it
( it’s very tender marinated in a sweet bourbon sauce)

Because they all use salad dressing (mayo)

In Swedish, for example, the word "salad" means lettuce. A tuna salad or chicken salad is served with lettuce. If you put it on bread it may or may not include the lettuce. Perhaps these other "salads" were served with lettuce in the past. Of course, "salad" comes from the Latin word for "health". I'm not sure what a ham salad is, but if it's "deviled ham", I love it. And the other "salads" you mention are things I love.

Of course Wiki has the long explanation. They say the word derives from the Latin (herba) salata for salted herbs.

I think I used to wonder the same thing about potato salad when I was little.
