I lost my waterbath canner (21 qt, graniteware) in a previous move. I would like to can some veggies this year, and so have been trying to find a canner.

Then I read in one description that the graniteware is not recommended for ceramic top stoves as they are not completely flat on the bottom. ?????

Anyone have experience w/ using a waterbath canner on a ceramic top stove?

Also, any suggestions were to find one? I am finding plenty of the pressure cooker types of canners, but I just want a waterbath type. I found one online at KMart but they are out of stock.

Sure appreciate any help! Thanks!

Can't help with the first question. As to locating a waterbath canner- find a nice hardware store in a small town. You'd be amazed at some of the stuff they carry.

I asked my sister about this, (she is a county extension agent), and she told me that most of glass/ceramic stove tops have a mechanism built in to protect the glass surface. If the surface gets too hot a certain distance from the burner the burner will turn off. Since most canners are very wide at the bottom it is highly discouraged to use a ceramic stove to canning on.

She went on to say that the reason flat bottomed pots and pans are recommended for use on glass/ceramic stoves is because non-flat bottomed pots and pans can damage the stove by causing hot spots.

She recommended one of those cast iron propane burners...

I would also recommend a propane burner that comes with a turkey fryer pot. I used one of those with a 15 gallon beer keg to cook down tomato sauce. Where else can you get a 15 gallon, food quality stainless steel pot for only a ten dollar deposit?

You could try finding a waterbath canner at a local flea market if they have them near you.

Just to be certain, what are you planning on canning, specifically? Low acid foods like vegetables (carrots, beans, peas, etc.) and meats need to be pressure canned. High acid foods (most fruits including tomatoes if acid is added, pickles, jams, etc.) can be waterbathed.
