The best "foodie" movie and the best food scenes both: EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN. The opening makes you salivate and want to rush off and prepare a Chinese feast.
I also love Moonstruck's meal scenes.
Although its not a movie, many of the food scenes on The Sopranos (yes, I bought the Sopranos cookbook).
and in contrast, I also like the very spartan dining scenes you find in some French or Scandinavian films, like the one that starts at 5:00 in this film:
And EVERY FOOD SCENE in "Moonstruck!" Of course! The restaurant scenes are terrific, too, with Bobo and John Mahoney, whose dates keep throwing drinks at him, and at home, when Olympia Dukakis says something like, "You feed those dogs any more of my food, old man, and I'll kick you till you're dead."
In the movie the Truth about Cats and Dogs, there's a great scene with Uma Thurman eating a piece of cake. Cool song in the background too, I can't find the clip, but she 'doesn't eat' and her date sets the cake in front of her and she savors it.
Theres another funny scene involving food where a guy is eating in a pool and the food floats around and lands on his friend. Can't remember who or what movie though.
Would love to see that in person - must have been an incredible sight. Where there any restaurants that
had pierogi/varenyky filled with meat?
In the cities, sure. I lived in a village, and there was only one store. You never knew what they would have in stock on any given day. Sometimes bread. Sometimes mayonnaise. Sometimes chicken. This was before Perestroika.
Varenyky filled with meat are called pelmeni. They're small and are like a boiled pasta dough or dumpling filled with meat and usually served in a chicken broth with dill. Delicious!!

Yep.
