If I make a dish--say, a meatloaf--and want to know the caloric content per serving, can I simply add up the calories of all the ingredients and then calculate what portion I ate?
For instance, I would add up the calories in 2 lbs ground turkey, 1 packet onion soup mix, 1 cup crushed crackers, etc., to get the total calories of the entire meatloaf. All those things have the nutritional info on the packages or is easily found out. Then, if I ate 1/8 of it, I would just divide by 8.
There are computer programs written to help you with this. There is a free online guide from the USDA that you can download. Google "Nutritive Value of Foods" and you should pull it right up.
That is a good guide. I am looking at it now. I have a similar one at home. It's good for things like, "How many calories are in this cup of carrots?" or "How many calories are in this bowl of shredded wheat and milk?" Meatloaf can have so many different things in it that I think a guide like this could only just estimate. Some people use crackers, others use bread, others use white rice or brown rice, others don't add any starch ... my grandma puts bacon on top.

Is that right?
Yup.
Don't forget your spices if you're counting carbs.
