If you can stretch it just a tad, check out the Calphalon stainless steel (not the non-stick or coated varieties). Bed-Bath-Beyond runs sales on that stuff regularly, and it is really high-quality; got a set for my spouse for Solstice a few years ago, and I think that in the 33 years we've been together, that's the gift that he has enjoyed and used the most. Worth every penny.
I have Wolfgang Puck SS cookware and a set of Cuisinart nonstick. I also have several pieces of cast iron which I like a lot. Different types for different tasks. I buy a lot at Amazon, great buys. Cuisinart also has a SS line.

Plus you get to benefit from the use of them. It's a win-win.
You definitley need either stainless steel or something with a non-stick bottom. It's not worth getting anything else, because it will either scratch or rust. Try T-fal, Cephalon, etc. I got a 10-piece set of T-fal on eBay for just $60.
I love to get cookware from Marshall's & TJ Maxx. They carry Calphalon, Cuisnart, Wolf Puck etc. In fact I purchased a 10 inch lodge cast iron skillet and a Dutch oven from them just this past weekend. They have a nice selection and great prices.
