Noodles - for long life
Fish - for abundance
Meat - because meat is eaten at special occasions
A "pickled" dish. It's not pickled like a pickle, but it contains vinegar with brown sugar (to cut the tartness). Vinegar in Chinese is pronounced "swoon" or sharp. The symbolism of this dish is so that you will have a sharp tongue or an become an eloquent speaker.

Technically, they are all true. But of course no one thinsk about that stuff when eating. Just like, do Americans think about the history and symbolisms of the various American food at Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Actually, saobi, there is a history and/or symbolism to what is eaten at our holidays. I don't dwell on it, but I am aware of it. Thanks for sharing, both of you.
