Happy Chinese New Years!

To give you a brief history of the food:

Chicken - because you should be showy/flamboyant like a rooster

Noodles - for long life

Fish - for abundance

Meat - because meat is eaten at special occasions

A "pickled" dish. It's not pickled like a pickle, but it contains vinegar with brown sugar (to cut the tartness). Vinegar in Chinese is pronounced "swoon" or sharp. The symbolism of this dish is so that you will have a sharp tongue or an become an eloquent speaker.

Technically, they are all true. But of course no one thinsk about that stuff when eating. Just like, do Americans think about the history and symbolisms of the various American food at Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Come on, no need to read too much into stuff.

Actually, saobi, there is a history and/or symbolism to what is eaten at our holidays. I don't dwell on it, but I am aware of it. Thanks for sharing, both of you.

Is the second one squid, scored into little diamonds? - very pretty....looks yummy

Names/descriptions for all of them would be good, my Chinese reading is a bit rusty

Would especially like to know what the scallop shell dish is - please?

Happy New Year!!!

Looks great. I knew there was a reason I was considering Chinese food tonight!

I have added the link to my favorites

(perhaps I was Chinese in a previous life?)
