I recently traveled to Boston and ate at some fine restaurants and ordered steak. I attempted to get some steak sauce for my food and was told that they did not offer any.

First I thought it might be a Boston thing but later I determined that other places I had ate at in other towns had told me the same thing. I always liked my steak better with steak sauce even at fine dining establishments with great steaks.

What do you think about asking for steak sauce at a nice restaurant?

The big steak houses frown upon steak sauce and heaven forbid you ask for ketchup. If a steak is cooked and seasoned properly it shouldn't need sauce, the sauce only takes away from the true flavor, at least that's what the chef's will tell you. You're entitled to eat your steak any way you please.

They were trying to protect you from yourself. That stuff tastes like poison to me.

A good steak is much better without it.

It's ok on burgers though.

Steak sauce is for the $7.99 18oz. ribeye at a truck stop, not a good cut of meat at a fine establishment. I have members of my family who will order their steak burnt to a crisp (well done) and cover it with A-1 no matter the quality. Shameful. I always liked 57 better than A-1 anyway .

Steak sauce should be offered. I like the flavor of steak without anything, but if you're paying for a steak it's your business what you do with it.

There are all kinds of really good sauces that you can put on a nice steak which will enhance the flavor of the meat, but IMHO A-1 and H-57 are not included . Sometimes I like a little red wine mushroom sauce, or a good gorgonzola sauce, or a shiitake cream sauce, or just a little lemon butter sauce. Usually in a really nice restaurant you can order some type of sauce. Maybe you should tuck your own bottle of steak sauce in your purse/briefcase .

I think you should eat your steak however you prefer, but the answer to your question is yes, it's out of style. I like the idea of carrying your own in.

The higher end steak houses won't offer them. I love steak sauce, but at those places, I never need it. It's actually better without it.

Back when I was a road warrior, I ate in a lot of Sizzler and the like steak houses. I got in the habit of enjoying H57 on the baked potato
