Hmmm. Could it possibly have been habaneros en adobo, by any chance?
It's a lot more common to find chipotles en adobo. (chipotles = smoked jalapeño) The adobo sauce is as you describe, dark red and very thick.
Do realize that although chipotles are smoked jalapenos, they are generally quite a but hotter.
If you have a gourmet grocery store or a Mexican market,check there for whole Habaneros(if you want to make the sauce yourself)......you can sometimes find Habanero sauces at the grocery store and once in a blue moon you might find whole ones.You might have to search a bit.
Be aware that Habaneros are VERY hot.
