2.3's are really good motors, and you can make some power with them, but its going to take plenty of money.

Ive built up a bunch of Mustangs. My advice, go straight to a 351. You are already doing a swap, so dont waste your time on a thin walled 302.

Second picture is the PCV valve. The first picture is just a breather that vents crankcase gases back into the induction system.

I took my car to napa after work today and a employee discovered that the pcv valve wasn't connected correctly. There is suppose to be another hose to attach the bottom of the pcv valve. So, we looked around for the hose and luckily we found it and I reconnected it before I left napa. Who knows, maybe my car will finally quit smoking and the check engine light will go off now.

Turbocharge it. that's what the S/C T bird was. Also the 1984-86 SVO Mustangs had turbo 2.3's in them.

Keep in mind regardless of what engine you have, once you mat the pedal, it's going to consume fuel. If you decode to go turbo 4 it's going to consume fuel, but only while in boost.

IMO the way you drive it makes a difference. What are you getting on the 2.3? I regularly got 17mpg on my 5.0 running in the city, (~220 miles per tank) and 23+ on the highway (with 3.73 gears). Stock I got up to 27 hwy. Back in the "drive 55" days I could almost get 30mpg! (29.9 - made it from Houston to New Orleans on one tank, about 365 miles on 12.2 gals)

I know I did not get good mileage on the 2.3 I had before, because I was always driving it harder. With the 5.0 I start out in 1st, shift to 3rd, then to 5th and just cruise along. I miss driving it. I need to get the motor replaced soon so I can drive it again.

The turbo 4 is a good option if you can find one that has been rebuilt and with a good turbocharger. That way you can use a lot of the accessories and stuff you already have.

Hopefully the PCV hose was your problem!

I went to work this morning and I park my car as I usually do. I didn't see any smoke coming from under the hood and underneath the car. So, I may have fixed the problem by simply reconnecting the 3rd hose to the pcv valve. I'm gonna do an oil change this weekend because it hasn't been done since august 2012. So, I think its about that time to do it again
