My son has a 1996 Mustang Cobra and a local shop told him his flywheel was going out so I was wondering on average what kind of cost is he looking at to replace it?

Is he just going to change the flywheel, or is he going to replace the clutch as well?

In order to get at the flywheel...... the clutch assembly has to come out, too. At that time, a smart car owner will ask the tech to inspect the clutch pressure plate, throw out bearing and clutch release linkage. If there is any sign of clutch plate slippage, or soft springs in the pressure plate...replace it.

A manual transmission car needs to have all of the drive line working at maximum efficiency.

Cobra's use the 8 bolt flywheel. They are more expensive than the 6-bolt flywheels used by the 4.6L SOHC in the GT.

I'd probably go with this one as it's the closest to an OEM replacement as you'll get. Aftermarket flywheels are going to cost a bit more.

Ford part number M-6375-G46A. Google search that to find a vendor with cheapest price.

I second taking a peek at the clutch/pressure plate and possibly replacing that. You didn't say why the shop thought the flywheel was "going out" though so can't recommend anything else.

Ive never seen a flywheel "go out". Warped, cracked, bad ring gear, etc yes. What exactly is wrong with it? I suspect since its a Cobra, he got the flywheel hot and warped it. In any case, I agree with the others, all new stuff since its there.

I replaced one on a 1972 El Camino that I had about 7-8 years ago for under $200, parts and labor, but things have gone up a lot since then. I would agree that while apart it's best to replace the clutch, and related parts that may be worn, and would expect the whole job to be $1,200-1,500.

Im seeing flywheels from 300 and up for the Cobra, Kits average about 900 up to the 1500 range. Then there is the labor. I would fully expect this to be at a $1000 job, if not more, for "factory type" parts.

$750-1000ish?

New clutch and flywheel prob around $500-600. Figure 3-4 hours of labor at whatever the shop rate?
