At the launch of the 2011 Mustang, Chief Engineer Dave Pericak said that there are no plans to bring a 4-cylinder version of Ford’s much ballyhooed EcoBoost line of direct injected, turbo engines to the Mustang lineup.

“Right now we don’t see us going any lower…Right now we don’t plan to go backwards and go down in horsepower. We’re going to stay at at least 305 (hp) and take this thing to the next level,” Pericak told Fox Car Report.

Hmmm, it would have been interesting to see how it performed. I wonder if any Ford Probe owners will try to put the 2.0L direct injection turbo in their car? Doubt it'd be worth the time and money. Will this 2.0L be offered in the Fusion or Focus RS?

2Liter Ecoboost engine is 230 HP if it was in the Mustang
Ford Fusion engines are
2.5 Duratec 4 cylinder 175hp
3.0 Duratec 6 cylinder 240hp
3.5 Duratec 6 cylinder 263hp

Ford could drop the first two Fusion engines and make the 2.0L the base engine with better performance and fuel economy than either of the two. It'd probably be better balanced with the front end weight reduction.

They can reliably make much more than 230hp with that engine. 280hp is not out of the question

Be interesting to see what this lighter engine would have done for front to rear weight ratio, handling, acceleration, and fuel economy. It would have been faster than the SVO and potentially cornered better than the GT depending on the suspension and tire setup.

If they could get that much out of that engine then Ford could drop all three engines from the Fusion and go down to the 2.0L direct injection only. Leave the base model without the turbo and the optional model with the turbo. They could then offer aftermarket performance kits available to add a turbo and intercooler to the car. Then make the Fusion hybrid run with the 2.0L direct injection engine for even greater fuel efficiency AND better acceleration numbers than the base 2.5L engine.

With the technology we have, it's possible to build a turbo 4 cylinder that would keep up with the V8 while using less fuel in the process other than when you're in the boost, obviously.

No, but it sounds like a good engine for the Focus RS or Fusion.
