Considering a job in Fort Collins. Housing costs seem high there. We wouldn't mind a commute. Actually we'd prefer to live outside of town. We love everything Fort Collins has to offer but prefer to live in a rural setting. We aren't interested in townhouse living. Schools are important.

Also, how much public land access is within 45 minutes of Fort Collins? Intersted in hunting ducks, upland birds, and fishing.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Where in Ft Collins will you be working? (commute INSIDE the city can be brutal) ACROSS the city EEK!

I would choose HIGH GROUND in Rist Canyon for a nice 'outdoorsy place with EZ commute (to west Ft Collins).

For bird hunting... Look to places near Severance (SE of Ft Collins). Some private lakes offer leased blinds, but it is getting pretty populated around there. Pawnee Grasslands is great and about 35 minutes east of I-25 on HWY 14.

Wyoming for Fishing (Lakes and streams). Saratoga is a good place to start.

The job would be at CSU. I have no idea where CSU is in relation to the city and can see how it would be important. Do you still think HIGH GROUND in Rist Canyon is a good place to commute from? Thanks so much for your input.

CSU is West central FoCo.

Masonville / Horsetooth are alternative locations with EZ access (I grew up on a ranch in Masonville a million people ago (Now it is a county park.. no cows, just people and mtn bikes )
Rist Canyon is very pretty and great access to Buckhorn and upper Poudre without the crowds of Ft Collins and lower Poudre. There will be some bargain props in Rist Canyon due to last yrs floods. Keep out of the flood plain. The river properties look pretty barren and mangled, but will recover nicely in 5 yrs. (We got flooded nearly every yr on the Buckhorn River)

Traveling is a nightmare here, we are packed in tight. The freeway is bad, it is a sad excuse for a freeway. Just getting across town is a panic attack. Housing very high, no land. Weather great. Everything else is high dollar. Very expensive and high taxes.
