I am a 28 year old post graduate student living in the state of Tennessee. I've visited south florida twice and absolutely fell in love with it. Now I want to move there.

I know the economy is bad and jobs are scarce, but is there anything in environmental science or in the science field that maybe I can get some employment from?

Also, I would like to get some ideas on where to move. All help is appreciated.

Well, first I have to say...visiting FL and living in FL are two different things. You may want to take a harder look or if possible stay with friends/family for an extended stay to get a really good idea of the area. Also, if you do that it will help you see the areas first hand and which ones work for your lifestyle.

In regards to your line of work...I have no clue but some searching on various job sites may help. Do you know of any companies based out of South Florida that hire for your skill set?

You know what, if you're able to find a job down here in your line of work, I think you'll truly enjoy living here. You'll eventually get use to the people down here compared to Tennessee and just be one of us. We mostly all came from somewhere else anyways. Not everyone adjust well and will like it in the long run, but the majority do and learn to enjoy the subtleties of living in South Florida.

I can relate to kidplatinum's reply. I moved to California after having visited only once....big mistake and I ended up back in NJ after a few years. This time I have the experience of visiting the Ft Lauderdale area numerous times before finally deciding it was for me. I know I'll be jonesing for those nights out in NYC, but I have plenty of friends to visit.

Don't really know any companies as of now, but I am going to numerous sites. I have applied for a few jobs.

I love the Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale area. If you're looking for more of a younger crowd (25-35) and fun things to do, than Ft. Lauderdale would be your best bet. There's the downtown area with a lot of restaurants, museums, and the beach. If you want more of the quiet life, but within reach to all the fun, I would check out Hollywood. There's also Weston, which is really nice. It's a growing city, but expensive. One thing I might add, in general, people in Tennessee are a lot nicer than people in South Florida.

Yea the people here are really nice that is a major plus. But it is very slow and boring sometimes. I am planning another trip down there soon to check out the living and get an idea of how it really is. I am mainly checking out the Ft. Lauderdale area because the Miami area seems way too expensive. I know I would probably have to really find a good job to stay afloat down there.

If you don't have a full time job lined up do not move. It is very tuff down here and almost crazy to make that move with no job offer.

I was looking at Fla myself. I have family there. S Fla has oh sooo many problems. All I can say is Google it and do your research. They are running out of drinking water and many other troubles abound. There is a reason why there is a mass exodus from there. They are talking about redirecting water from the north. Taxes are out of hand because they are trying to keep things a float and this is one reason they are running everyone out. Then since everyone is running out they need more money for the loss of revenue so they raise taxes more to try to get revenue.
It is a vicious cycle. Environmental issues are key and you really need to do your homework.

Gottamoov what are you talking about? I live in Broward County and as far as I know there is no mass exodus, but the opposite. The housing market for middle income has actually started to really take a turn around compared with a lot of other places in the US. My husband has been trying to help his son look for a home and he is actually losing most houses he puts an offer in for due to people offering OVER the asking price. He has been going through this for months. Housing has started to rebound (a lot better than some places in this country) and people are buying again. The economy is bad all over, yes, but I see it a lot worse in industrialized states in the midwest. As far as drinking water....this has been going on since 2001 and it has been said by scientists that water shortages are starting to happen all over the country. I can link you to articles about this if you would like. It's called 'global warming'.

Now Mikensu.... locate a job before you move down here....remember our summers are sweltering hot, jobs are hard to come by whatever state you relocate to (not sure about your industry) and housing is prob much more expensive than TN. Take a look at realtor.com and see places like Weston as someone mentioned, Ft lauderdale is generally good but there are some bad pockets so be careful there, and Hollywood is ok, but a lot of pockets of retirees and the beach in Hollywoood is not that great, lots of drifters renting by the week on a lot of the beach. Good luck in whatever you decide!
