Family moving to Fort Lauderdale from Boston (Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs: apartments, rental)

Hi,
My husband just got a job at NOVA and he starts the first week of July. We're a couple in our early thirty's with two small kids, ages 3 and 4. I'm wondering what areas are the best to live with kids , and with a reasonable commute time to his job (under 20 or 30 minutes). I want to keep our rent at or under $1000. Is that doable?

It may be doable, but with a limit of $1000 your options are limited. There is an abundance of apartments in Davie and Plantation within 5-15 minutes driving of the university, but the rents I've seen for 2-3 BR's are mostly above $1000. If that fails, check out suburbs further west in Sunrise, Cooper City, Weston, Coral Springs, and Pembroke Pines. The schools are good in those areas generally and rents tend to be less than Davie or Plantation. Rule out anything further east because rents will be higher for less desirable areas and poor school districts.

For 1000 a month, a good school district and close to Nova criteria filled, you would probably be looking at a 1 bedroom condo in most neighborhoods or a mobile home in the western half of Davie. Go to at least 1200 for another bedroom and preferably 1500.

I would focus on Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines rental communities. Those areas seem to have the least expensive rents for decent places.
