Hi all, we are a family from the Netherlands, and we are considering spending Christmas and the new year in Hollywood (we would rent an apartment more or less on the beach/Broadwalk).
I read mixed reviews of Hollywood, but positive reviews about the beach and the Broadwalk), so please share any thoughts you have about our vacation plan!

Hollywood has parts that are not that great, but the beach is nice.

Thanks - maybe I should clarify that we are a family of four, with two boys aged 13 and 15, into surfing and skateboarding. Beach life is what we are looking for, but obviously if the nearby surroundings are also attractive that would help. There's no perfect place, and if we were looking for Disneyland we would go there!

Hollywood Beach broadwalk would be a great place to ride their skateboards. Now surfing... the ocean won't be too warm around Christmas time, but you guys will probably find it warm enough. There should be some waves. Not sure about surfing waves, but anything is possible.

I have read good reviews about this place
Villa Europa Hotel (Hollywood, FL) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor

Hollywood beach area is pretty nice, there are a bunch of shops/motels/restaurants all along the beach.

Not as glamorous as South Beach in Miami though. Have you looked at South Beach?

P.S. Dutch, how cool. I work for a Dutch company in Fort Lauderdale.

Thanks Ruski, we did look at South Beach, and while it is more glamorous it has a number of negative points (not least cost of accommodation) that would make Hollywood potentially a better location for a beach vacation. Hollywood Beach which looks really nice, but at the same time I'm told there are some less attractive parts of Hollywood. I suppose I am worried that the only nice area is the beach, and that by staying in Hollywood you are effectively consigned to the beach.
Thanks also for pointing out the Villa Europa Hotel (appropriate name!) but it's full and we have our eye on a place a little further south on the broadwalk.
And after the last winter we had over here, trust me: anything over 32 F is tropical!

True, the rest of Hollywood is "meh" for a tourist. And some parts of Hollywood (OFF the beach) are not desirable.

But really I don't see any reason to be exploring the non-beach parts of Hollywood if you are a tourist, it is all residential. Well, maybe some shopping and restaurants at Young Circle. Or take a ride to the HardRock Casino - there are nice outdoor venues there.

What do you want to do besides the beach?

Besides the beach - to go and see places (we are tourists after all). As I see it the HB location would be great for the beach and serve as a home from home to explore. But again, if one block away from the beach area means nastiness then maybe it is not the right place. However from what I read on TripAdvisor the beach area is popular and enjoyable; and no area anywhere is ever going to be 100% safe and perfect, right?

You could always stay at the Hard Rock...
Seriously though, maybe you should look in Fort Lauderdale, it is not Miami, but is better for a tourist than Hollywood.

No, there is no nastyness one block away from teh beach. This is because the beach is on the barrier island, there is only one street running North-South along the beach. There is the beach on one side and the Intracoastal (think river) on the other side. And it is all very well patrolled.

The few nasty areas of Hollywood are on the mainland.

You should familiarize yourself with this post
//www.city-data.com/forum/fort-...nty-rated.html

You can see that Hollywood *Beach* is quite far from any of those areas. And separated by the Intracoastal too.

I was also going to suggest Fort Lauderdale. I would normally choose it over Hollywood ***
But the OP mentioned the kids who like to ride skateboards.
I think Hollywood Beach is better suited for that since there is the broadwalk, and there is NO street to cross between the hotels and the beach.

In Fort Lauderdale, where most hotels are along the beach, there is A1A between the hotels and the beach.

*** I was just at Hollywood Beach last weekend and it seemed kind of dirtier than normal.

P.S. Pelican Grand resort in Fort Lauderdale is ON the beach
