I'm living on a property in coral springs in front of a drainage ditch. I've heard about water moccasins, etc lurking in these waters. I have a one year old who might be in danger of falling into this canal or worse...does anyone know if it's legal to put in a 4 foot chain link fence on my property in front of these canal?

You need to call your local municipality.

Coral Springs has some very strict guidelines for what they will/won't allow in their city. You may want to call the Building and Zoning department. I've seen chain link fences, but am not sure what the stipulations are.

You do realize a water moccasin can go through a chain link fence right? Check with the city, you may find out you don't even own the property abutting the canal and your real property line is closer to the house.......

A chain link fence is NOT going to prevent a toddler from getting to the water.

It won't prevent creatures from getting in either. You might want to see what a pool fence company can do. They use a mesh fabric that cannot be climbed. It is actually fairly see-through as well so the view won't be obstructed.

When I lived in Plantation Isles (on a canal), many homeowners had installed pool "childproof" fencing along the canal as a temporary measure, or had installed full vinyl or iron picket-type fencing. The latter is a more attractive permanent solution than chain link so your neighbors will thank you.

Call the Building Department of your city.
